XML has been developed as a standard data format for information storage and exchange. In most XML database systems, queries are processed by searching the hierarchy of each underlying XML document. Similar to relational databases, most XML documents are actually designed based on the relationship among such semantic concepts as object, attribute and value. Moreover, queries are also issued with concerns of these concepts, e.g., to find the attribute values of a certain object or to find the relationship between two objects. This book presents a new approach to process XML queries. We take semantics as a central concern during XML query processing. We design semantics-based algorithms to perform pattern matching, which is the core operation for XML query processing, as well as grouping and aggregation for analytical queries. We theoretically and experimentally show the advantage of our semantic approach over other existing approaches, in terms of query processing performance. This result should be useful for future research and applications in XML data management.

In order to alleviate the problem of patchy and inconsistent epidemiological data, a well structured, interoperable spatial data model for disease surveillance and monitoring is developed. This book reviews some of the existing health data models which were modified and extended to develop a data model for disease surveillance, monitoring, and management. The data model captures information required for the development of diseases surveillance systems. The model is developed using the Unified Modelling Language. The work aims to produce the model as an open standard in order to promote collaboration and encourage researchers in developing nations to contribute to the maintenance of the data model. The model is implemented in XML, and will be applied to a system using service oriented architecture with a focus on HIV/AIDS surveillance and monitoring in Nigeria.
The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) provides health and nutrition services to children under 6 years, pregnant women and adolescent girls in India To assess the data collection and data management process at different levels in ICDS, to assess whether there are data discrepancies/gaps during data transfer at different levels in ICDS and to describe the possible reasons for this data discrepancy. The study was done using a cross sectional descriptive design in the Keonjhar district of Orissa. Multistage sampling method was used. The Anganwadi supervisor, child development project officer and 5 beneficiaries were also chosen from each Anganwadi Center and interviewed with the help of a check list. None of the Anganwadi workers (AWW) were using all the registers as instructed by the program for collecting essential data. The weight of the children recorded by the anganwadi worker was significantly different from the weight recorded for the same children by the researcher (p = 0.023). The Preschool Education (PSE) attendance according to the parents’ response and the anganwadi register were significantly different(p=0.000).
Many automatic schema matching approaches have been proposed, but the challenge is still daunting because of the complexity of schemas and immaturity of technologies in semantic representation, measuring, and reasoning.The book focuses on three challenging problems in schema matching. First, the existing approaches have often failed to sufficiently investigate and utilize semantic information imbedded in the hierarchical structure of the XML schemas. Secondly, due to synonyms and polysemies found in natural languages, the meaning of a data node in the schema cannot be determined solely by the words in its label. Thirdly, it is difficult to correctly identify the best set of matching pairs for all data nodes between two schemas.A variety of computer experiments have been conducted with encouraging results that show the proposed approaches in this book are valuable for addressing difficulties in XML schema matching.

BidXML provides a standardized way to input, modify, and exchange of bidding information by all the participants involved in the bidding process. Utilizing the XML Schema Definition (XSD) Language, the research first defined a data representation Schema called BidXML that effectively models the bidding information in an open format. Existing database systems do not provide the uniform support for both XML and Relational Data with similar storage and retrieval efficiencies. A generic data mediator provides uniform support for both XML and relational data with similar storage and retrieval efficiencies is produced; by using existing efficient schema-oblivious mapping strategies XNode and SUXCENT and free of cost available technologies: MySQL, PHPMyAdmin and PHP classes. The key to mediator approach is storing and retrieving XML documents in a relational database, providing a user interface for XML manipulation, independent of proprietorship and without doing any modification in its basic structure. After the mediator's implementation, the RDBMS becomes repository for both XML and Relational data simultaneously. The mediator has flexibility to add any proposed more efficient schema-oblivious XML mapping strategy as a new collection. The mediator can also be used as the benchmarking tool for the researchers to compare various schema-oblivious XML mapping strategies by adding a new collection. The comparative study of insertion, retrieval and query performance of these two types of mapping strategies is produced.
Wireless Sensor Networks have evolved as an alternative to wired networks fit for quick deployments in areas with limited access. New protocols have been devices to deal with the inherent scarcity of resources that characterizes such networks. Energy efficient network protocols are used for communication between nodes. Data collected by wireless nodes is transmitted at an energy cost and therefore carefully managed. The remote deployment of wireless networks opens the possibility of malicious attacks on the data and on the infrastructure itself. Security measures have also been devised, but they come at an energy cost. One item that has received little attention is the situation of the data sink becoming unreachable. The nodes still collect data as instructed and accumulate it. Under prolonged unavailability of the sink node, the storage space on sensor nodes is used up and collecting new data is no longer feasible. Our proposal for a prioritized data reduction alleviates this problem. The collected data is divided into data units who are assigned an importance level calculated in agreement with the business case.

we presented a technique to transform an XML DTD to a relational schema considering the structural aspects and the semantic aspects, such as domain constraint, not null constraint, cardinality constraints, ID constraint, and inclusion dependencies. The technique described how the various de?nitions in a given XML DTD, such as elements, attributes, parent-child relationships, ID-IDREF(s) attributes, and collection types can be mapped to entities and relationships. It described how to handle the Union types that are not present in relational model, and it showed that the XML’s ordered data model can be e?ciently supported by the unordered relational data model
The growth of scientific information and the increasing automation of data collection have made databases integral to many scientific disciplines including life sciences, physics, meteorology, and chemistry. These sciences pose new data management challenges to current DBMSs. This book addresses three key challenges in scientific data management: (1) Annotation Management: Annotations are important metadata that go hand-in-hand with scientific data. However, a major challenge is how to manage large volumes of annotations along with their corresponding data items. (2) Complex Dependencies Involving Real-world Activities: The processing of scientific data is complex and may involve sequences of activities external to the database system, e.g., wet-lab experiments, and manual measurements. The challenge is how to efficiently integrate these activities within the database engine. And (3) Fast Access to Scientific Data: Scientific experiments produce large volumes of data of complex types, e.g., arrays, images, and long sequences.
